PSHE

Here at Ditton, we are passionate about developing the ‘whole child’. Alongside our stand alone PSHE lessons, elements of PSHE and citizenship are embedded in our daily curriculum. We strive to develop pupils’ spiritual, moral and social cultural development in everything that we do.

Our vision for Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) ensures that pupils from Reception (PSED) to year 6 will develop the knowledge and understanding to keep themselves happy, healthy and safe and will gain the skills and attributes to prepare them for life and later learning. We want pupils to acquire strategies to manage and overcome any challenges they may face in life, and make the most of every opportunity given to them.

PSHE is a subject that impacts pupils’ lives both in and out of school, enabling pupils to become responsible members of society. We aim to help them to understand what it means to be a member of a diverse society, being aware of and respectful of differences and developing their own identity and a strong sense of self-worth. All whilst being a positive role model both in school and in the wider community.

Staff are committed to fostering transferable skills that support academic success and success in life beyond school. Including embedding interpersonal skills, such as listening, questioning, team-working, looking towards successes beyond school, including thinking about employability.

We follow a thematic approach, as outlined by the PSHE Association. The Programme of Study sets out learning opportunities for each key stage, in three core themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wilder World. We then adapt these themes to fit our children and the community. These core themes are built upon, year upon year to ensure pupils have a deep understanding by the time their primary school journey comes to an end.

RSE (relationships and sex education)

The Relationships Education, RSE, and Health Education (England) Regulations 2019 have made Relationships Education compulsory in all primary schools. All primary school children will be required to learn about relationships and health. Relationships and Health Education comprises two distinct areas:

  • Relationships
  • Physical health and mental wellbeing

We deliver this education in a way that is appropriate for children’s age and development stage and that is sensitive to the needs and religious backgrounds of the children at our school.

Parents cannot withdraw their child from any part of the Relationships and Health Education aspects of the RSE curriculum as it is important for ALL children to be taught the content on such essential matters like friendships and keeping safe. As a WPAT school, we have already agreed that we will only teach elements of Sex Education as outlined in the Primary Science curriculum.
